2009 HIV/AIDS & Substance Abuse Awareness Conference
We held our first-ever conference on HIV/AIDS and substance abuse awareness on Wednesday, June 10. Hundreds of guests and dozens of doctors, researchers, health professionals, counselors, and volunteers met at Shreveport’s Riverview Hall to address the serious risks these problems have posed to our communities. This day-long event also included health seminars presented by personnel from LSU Health Sciences Center, Philadelphia Center, Pines Treatment Center, and others.Local dignitaries, including Shreveport Police Chief Col. Henry Whitehorn, were on hand to give their regards. Rev. Leroy Scott, a minister and nationally certified counselor from Baton Rouge, spoke about personal and financial giving at the conference luncheon, while eminent Rev. Dr. Mairus McFarland gave an inspiring speech of compassion for and support of this cause. Steeple Community founder and CEO Gregory Kirby thanked guests and urged for continued support in this endeavor.
The conference also featured local business vendor booths, a jazz luncheon and fashion show, courtesy of Dillard’s and Lancome in Pierre Bossier Mall, and a riveting musical performance by jazz violinist Michael Ward and Muzikology.
